Middle and high school students gathered at the Old Stone House on Sunday, March 25th from 2-4pm for the “Get Out the Vote PB Student Training.”
The event kicked off with a brief introduction to the PB process and PB Youth Committee led by committee co-facilitators Ilana Cohen and Eliza Callahan. Participants enjoyed pizza while watching the presentation, which was soon followed by a detailed poll site training. Ilana and Eliza laid out the five-step process of working a poll site: welcome the potential voter, confirm their eligibility to vote, register the voter, help them vote, and collect their ballots/voter survey. After the training session, participants found partners and practiced the five-step process, alternating roles as a poll site worker and first-time PB voter.
The participants then engaged in a series of three PB Youth-led workshops. First, Chris Stauffer and Stasya Rodionova led “How to Talk About PB,” teaching students how to provide a 20-second wrap on the PB process for passers-by who might be interested in voting. Next, Jessica Cohen and Claire Foley led “PB Pics and Flicks,” discussing how to use social media to effectively promote PB. Students made #ivotePBNYCbecause posters and took pictures for the @pb.youth Instagram account. During the poster-making session, Council Member Brad Lander dropped by to support the students and take a few Insta-worthy pics himself! Lastly, Ilana and Eliza led the “All About the Ballot” workshop, showing participants how to fill out capital vs. expense PBNYC ballots and reviewing the expense projects on District 39’s 2018 ballot.
To close the meeting, participants agreed on taking the following action items to get out the PB vote for upcoming PBNYC Vote Week (April 7th-15th):
With new skills and knowledge, students are eager to tackle PB Vote Week!
